Jun 26th, 2008 The Welcome of at day at seaI awaken to the sound of the water gently lapping along the side of this 89 foot double masted schooner. I remember the setting sun fire red in the sky of the night before. I quickly dress in a shorts and a hoodie - chilly morning. As I come up from below quietly as not to wake others, the sun is just peaking over the horizon. The anticipation of a good day of sailing is what awakened me so early. The galley girl is up as I smell the wood burning in the stove with the mess already preparing for the day. I glance over and the white smoke mixing with the left over moisture of the night is quite a sight of white plumes. The fumes of coffee mix in with the smell of the pines coming from the coastline. We are anchored in the beautiful cove with pines and rocky coast. The egrets picking up periwinkles on the coast for their morning meal. I grab the sqeegy to get rid of the dew on the deck from the previous cool night. It is still chilly but it is a welcoming feeling on top of the burn of my skin from yesterday's beautiful sun. Goosebumps and a smile. The Penobscot bay is a magnificent place. Cadillac Mountain is a half day away. The breeze continues to make the sounds of the morning on the Atlantic, the gulls call out in the sky, the sheets clanging against the masts to add to the excitment of upcoming day. The galley girls must be starting the breakfast bacon as the smells are growing. The sign that the others will soon be up and share in this unbelievable experience. I wish this could last just a few more minutes of solitude. The peace of no human sounds. My pulse quickens knowing that in less than two hours we will pull anchor and be on our way. "Good morning, oh it's chilly" is heard from another cabin mate. I'll have to wait for tomorrow for another glorious morning off the coast of Maine. The day will be just as magnifcent, but for different reasons.
