Stinky is leaving tonight

Stinky is the man boy that lives in my world.  He is really a treat that I cherish.  He has filled a huge void in my life.  I swear, if I don't screw this job up, it will be nothing short of a miracle.  He has been a work in process for 16 years.

It is the time in a young man's life to look to the future. He will be golfing for a week on various college campuses as my angel sister takes him west. He and I have done the South during college basketball season.  We saw some great games and met some great people It was however, an eye opener for a woman who did college while living home with Toots, a hundred years ago.

It is important to us that he go away for school.  Far from his mother's neurotic overbearing behavior.  Being an only, the independence is an absolute necessity.

He is a kind, grounded thinker and takes life cautiously.  He is so unlike me having been flying by the seat of my pants my entire life.  Like me he has not one mean bone in his body and I fear that this gentle giant won't see the meaness coming towards him until it's too late.  I'm tough due to the lessons learned , he's still kind.

This week will be a huge test for the both of us.  Memories made that we don't share.

He has become my friend. A dangerous postion to allow as a parent.  But as I said earlier, if I don't screw this us up ...

Fly my lovely man boy  - but please remember to use that huge body of yours only as necessary.

This is a beautiful blog. I have two sons, and often wonder what life will be like when I need to let them go. Thank you for a peak into the future. I wish you both well on the next chapter of your lives.

Thank you - I didn't think to expect this. I was too busy with the daily to think too far into the future.

Stinky made my day - sent a text message - he is golfing the back nine at Notre Dame. Sent a photo of the football stadium - GO IRISH - may you continue to wear green.

I'm always amazed at how our "children's" happiness directly affects our own. I'm glad to hear that Stinky is doing well, it must give you a semblence of peace. GO IRISH!! LOL

Stinky is now playing Wisconsin. I keep getting football stadiums texted to my phone. The quiet is hideous at home. I no longer care for Lumpy (Stinky's father). The silence is deafening.

Stinky called - Notre Dame was "very impressive" was the response when asked. U of WI "big school, tough golf course." Going to Marquette today. My man boy is seeing good things. This could be a very interesting school year if he sets his sights. He has never not achieved his goals.

Stinky is on the way back but not without a day in Chicago and a visit to Northwestern where he informed me that the "seminary is beautiful." Oh Toots, did you hear that? I can't believe my man boy would admit to that. The big mean football player priest? The irony is overwhelming. Playing golf tomorrow at Perdue then to Ohio State. Angel sister is hoping he plays football for Penn State, so I'm pretty sure that will be the final school for this vacation. What a week for Stinky!

A call to Lumpy this morning - golf at Perdue. They are to stop at Penn State and expected home tomorrow night. A life time to wait.

Due home in 2 hours. The table set, all his favorite meal ready to go and the strawberries are chilling. "Ma, Penn State is awesome, I got on the field, the stadium, it's huge". We shall see, my man boy, we shall see...

Stinky has been home an entire day and this is a different man boy. I think he missed me. Telling stories of his adventure and willingness to help. Not locked up in his room - openly sharing and caring. Back to the real world - volunteering at Salvation Army (a school requirement) and then on to football (championships are made now). I guess I'll mow the lawn - again.
