Just the three of us

Toots would take us to Englishtown.  The pickles and the peanuts were great there.  Never to buy anything, we walked the auction, just the three of us.

The midget races at night were the best.  Sometimes we would stay for them, just the three of us.

Toots loved speed.  She would sit us in her lap and teach us how to shift the gears of the blue corvair.  There was no such thing as seat belts, air bags, rules and regulations.  Just our Mom playing with us, just the three of us.

One night after the races we were in the parking lot.  Toots tossed the keys to me and told me to "start your engine".  I had to have been maybe nine but I do believe younger than that.  Angel sister was having no part of this one.  She stood watching like I was about to ruin the universe.  It was her job as the older sister to always think I was going to ruin the universe.

The old watchman watched us while he smoked his cigarette.  Motioning to Toots to bring the car onto the track, she would oblige.  She told me to take the car over to the track.  My eyes looking like blue moons, I did what I had been told and managed to get that car to the gate without stalling out.  Angel sister stood in disbelief watching.

She would never back down from a dare. We had a hell of a night when Toots got behind the wheel and we raced that silly corvair around that track, just the three of us.

Twenty plus years later we are in Germany and I am about to join the "100 klub" and I look in the rear view mirror.  There are the greenist eyes looking like moons smiling back. I would never back down from a dare.  She must have been remembering, just the three of us.
